“NET DOEN OF HET ER NIET IS….TOT JE OMVALT!”
Nick is een geboren en getogen Leidenaar van 38 jaar die nu alweer zo’n 4 jaar in een woonomgeving specifiek ontwikkeld en ingericht voor mensen met een GGZ en/of verslavingsachtergrond woont en werkt hij onder eigen regie aan zijn herstel.
Nick heeft vanaf zijn 17e levensjaar last van een angststoornis, genaamd emetofobie. Een stoornis waarbij in stressvolle situaties braken een van de angsten is. “De stoornis heb ik waarschijnlijk al langer maar vanaf mijn 17e werd ik er mij bewust van. Daarbij kwam het vaker in de familie voor. Het is dus lastig te zeggen of het genetisch of aangeleerd gedrag is als je je moeder in stressvolle situaties in paniek hebt gezien.”

De stoornis leidde in eerste instantie niet tot de nodige stappen richting hulp. In tegendeel. Op z’n 18e moest hij noodgedwongen het ouderlijk huis verlaten en z’n eigen boontjes doppen. Met volle overgaven ging hij aan het werk in de detailhandel. De inkomsten waren niet toereikend om voldoende rond te komen. Hierdoor ontstonden schulden waar hij meer stress van kreeg. Daarbij ging het ook door de stoornis steeds verder bergafwaarts. “Tot mijn 27e heb ik mijn kop in het zand gestoken en alle signalen, zowel lichamelijk als mentaal, totaal genegeerd. Ik ging steeds meer in mijn eigen bubbel leven en creëerde mijn eigen wereld in mijn hoofd. Het daadwerkelijke probleem bleef ik vermijden tot het licht uitging en ik letterlijk omviel op mijn werk.”

Nick kwam in het ziekenhuis terecht met uitdroging en ondervoeding. “Ik woog op het moment van opname nog maar 45.5 kilo. Ik werd doorverwezen naar GGZ Rivierduinen waar vanuit onderzoeken en tests werd geconstateerd dat ik leed aan emetofobie!, het was voor mij een echte ‘wake-up-call’.” Naast de nodige medicatie wees de GGZ Nick op diverse hulptrajecten maar deze bleef hij vooralsnog vermijden. “Ik dacht gooi er wat medicatie in en ga gewoon door. Ik zag simpelweg geen heil in deze trajecten en ging snel weer aan de slag. Te meer omdat ik door huurachterstand mijn huis was kwijt geraakt en door de oplopende schulden voelde ik mij genoodzaakt snel weer aan het werk te gaan.”
Via Kwadraad kwam hij terecht in het Vriendenhuis en kon hij werken aan zijn herstel. “Van de artsen kreeg ik de nodige aansterkmiddelen en een eetschema’s mee. Netjes drie keer per dag eten en mij houden aan de structuur. Hoewel me dit prima lukt en ik na verloop van tijd weer op gezond gewicht kwam was ik mentaal nog steeds niet waar ik wezen moest.”
Dit veranderde nadat Nick iemand ontmoette die hem daadwerkelijk deed beseffen dat het leven anders is dan hij al die tijd dacht dat het was. “Je kunt gerust stellen dat ik eigenlijk best jaloers was op deze persoon, ze was zo in balans. Het werd mij helder dat ik strijdbaarder moest worden en mij minder als slachtoffer moest opstellen. Niet weglopen voor mijn problemen, geen zorg mijden maar juist de confrontatie aangaan met mijn problemen. Ze heeft mij gemotiveerd richting de GGZ en in therapie te gaan.”
“Momenteel volg ik schematherapie en ben mij steeds bewuster geworden van wie ik ben en hoe ik reageer in bepaalde situaties. De therapie was eerst pijnlijk, alles kwam naar boven, het bleek dat falen voor mij nooit een optie was geweest en ik niet kon accepteren dat ik iets gewoonweg niet kon.” Gaandeweg werd het voor Nick gemakkelijker om zich neer te leggen bij zaken die hij niet beheerst. “Administratie was niet mijn ding en wordt nu door schuldhulpverlening opgepakt en later hopelijk budgetbeheer. Dit geeft mij minder stress waardoor ik mij meer kan focussen op wat ik wel goed kan.” Toch vindt hij het woord “acceptatie” eigenlijk een lelijk woord. Het geeft mij het idee dat ik ergens mee klaar ben, hierdoor geef ik bepaalde eigenschappen een negatieve lading mee. Juist om er mee aan de slag te kunnen.” Zo typeert hij zichzelf als ‘lui’ in plaats van dat hij voor dingen wegloopt en daardoor niks oppakt. Dit geeft Nick het idee dat hij er blijvend mee aan de slag moet.
“Het lucht op om je verhaal kwijt te kunnen en misschien inspireert het anderen in soortgelijke situaties ook om daadwerkelijk stappen te zetten richting herstel.”
Vanuit deze gedachte wilde Nick graag weer dingen oppakken om zo weer verder ritme op te bouwen. “Ik ben namelijk een echte computernerd.” Zegt hij lachend. “Ik vind het bouwen van websites bijvoorbeeld echt fantastisch! Het lijkt me dan ook leuk om hier iets in te betekenen.”
Een tijdje geleden kwam hij in contact met Natalia Warmerdam om mogelijkheden te onderzoeken voor vrijwilligerswerk. Uiteindelijk werd dit een website bouwen en ontwerpen voor het project ‘Ik doe mee’. Een soort online community waar mensen ervaringen delen en elkaar kunnen ontmoeten door mee te doen aan verschillende activiteiten, trainingen en workshops. “Dit project sluit aan bij mijn persoonlijke situatie en daarom vindt ik het ook zo mooi om hieraan te werken. Mensen kunnen via dit platform elkaar ontmoeten, zich zelf ontwikkelen en ervaringen delen. De website staat nog in de steigers maar het is de bedoeling dat je er je eigen verhaal kunt delen en kan reageren op iemands verhaal. Het lucht op om je verhaal kwijt te kunnen en misschien inspireert het anderen in soortgelijke situaties ook om daadwerkelijk stappen te zetten richting herstel.”
